FAQs

How do I get a library card?

Please apply in person at either location to get your library card on the spot! Current residents 18 years of age and older must bring in proper identification (see below). Children up to age 17 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian with proper identification when applying for a card.

Want to start the process online? Check the Library District Map to verify you are a resident of the Algonquin Area Public Library District, then complete the online library card application form. Please designate the Harnish Main Library or Eastgate Branch Library as the preferred location for picking up your library card.

Your completed and submitted application will be processed within three business days, and you'll receive an email when your card is ready to be picked up. Please bring a valid state-issued ID (Driver’s License or State ID with name, photo, and current address) OR a photo ID AND one document with name and current address.

Unless requesting a digital access or limited access library card (high school students only), applicants under 18 must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian to sign for their library card. You have 30 days to pick up your new library card; after that, it will be deleted from the system.

If you have any questions or problems, please contact the Circulation Department at (847) 458-6060. ext. 4 (Harnish) or 847-658-4343 ext. 4 (Eastgate Branch.)

How do I request a meeting or study room?

Host your next meeting at the Library! AAPLD cardholders may reserve meeting rooms at the Harnish Main Library or the Eastgate Branch Library. Before requesting a room, please review our Meeting Room Policy. Your request must be received a minimum of 48 hours in advance of the day and time you need the room. Room reservation requests are reviewed by the Library during regular business hours, Monday through Friday between 9am and 4:30pm. You will be contacted about your reservation during these hours. Payments are not processed until the request has been reviewed and approved. By placing your request, you agree to accept the following policy as approved by the Library Board of Trustees:

“The Library reserves the right to cancel the reservations for any meeting because of Library priorities. In the event the Library cancels a meeting reservation, that reservation may be rescheduled, relocated based on availability, or the fee will be refunded.”

How do I use ebooks?

Please feel free to stop by our Adult Services Desk and we will walk you through the process of borrowing and using e-books. There are several ways to borrow e-books from the AAPLD collection: using the Libby App, the Overdrive App or Adobe Digital Editions. Kindle users can use their existing Amazon accounts to deliver AAPLD Kindle-formatted e- books to their devices as well. Click here for a printable brochure outlining each resource.

Questions? Please call us at 847-458-6060, ext. 144 during regular business hours or send an email to refdesk@aapld.org.

How do I get items delivered to my home?

We deliver! When you find the item you want in our online catalog, click on "Place Hold" and the system will give you the option to choose a pickup library or have the item mailed to you via USPS.

For our patrons who are unable to visit the library due to temporary or long-term physical or medical disabilities or lack of transportation, we also provide Home Delivery, where we deliver items once a month. Upon request, we can also help you select materials and help you locate information on a specific topic. You may request this service by filling out our online application. More information can be found on our services page.

How do I get help?

Problems signing in to your library card account? Don't remember your password? Can't log in to one of our online resource subscription services, such as hoopla, creativebug, or lynda? Please call our Adult Services Department at 847-458-6060, ext 143 and a friendly staff member can help you. Calling is the best option, but you can also send an email to refdesk@aapld.org during regular business hours and you'll get a response within a few hours.

Do you have income tax forms?

The IRS no longer prints tax forms and provides them to libraries for distribution to patrons and visitors. You can download tax forms and publications using these links:

  • Federal (call 1-800-829-3676 for free mail delivery)
  • Illinois (call 1-800-356-6302 for free mail delivery)

Seniors can obtain free assistance in preparing their taxes through AARP Foundation Tax-Aide.

How do I borrow materials from another library?

If the item isn't in our online catalog you may request it using interlibrary loan at your convenience. The length of time it takes to fulfill a request varies depending upon the availability and location of the item. If the item you are looking for is less than a year old, you might want to make a suggestion for purchase. For more information, see our Interlibrary Loan Policy.

Can I ask the library to purchase an item?

AAPLD cardholders can request an item to purchase for our collection by filling out this form. We will evaluate your request and get back to you within 5 business days.
